President's Article

By Jim Wright

It is true that change is constant. Many of us do not adapt to change as quickly as we should. I find myself saying "next year the chamber will..., or continue to write 2010 as the date on checks and documents," even though it is already next year, 2011.

From all indications the way we do business "this year" will change also. One example from www.Entrepreneur.com states: "The 76 million-strong demographic (Baby Boomers) is making headlines for providing a slew of market opportunities such as construction services that make homes more senior-friendly; supermarkets with lower shelves and wheelchair-compatible shopping carts; and sales and tech support by phone for seniors, by seniors."

Additionally, social networking will continue to dominate all market demographics. No longer will we think of computer based social networking as "new". It is a way of life. Those businesses that took forever to believe that e-mail and websites would be important business tools must now become more familiar with the social networking revolution or be forever left behind their competition.

If you don't know what an "app" is, try to become more familiar. iPhone's, droids, iPads and the like are loaded with apps. Consumers don't want mobile ads or text messaging to invade their lives as spam often does. What consumers want is the ability to pick the company's they want to do business with and utilize that companies "app" to make mobile payments, receive business specific offers and search related apps.

Another beneficial change includes the "flash sale". The Chamber is already working with local businesses to create the ability to offer limited-time instant sales available on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Call 821.4161 for more information. Ask for Jim.

Of course the Chamber has always been ahead of trends by realizing the benefits of what is known as O2O strategies. O2O is the utilization of both online and offline networking. Face to face or traditional networking doesn't conflict with online networking, they actually complement each other. The Chamber already uses online networking to direct members to our offline events, BAH's, luncheons etc. If you're not yet connected to the Kirkwood - Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter accounts, just send Jim an e-mail at jim@thechamber.us In 2011, O2O will be an immediate strategic marketing hit with the most successful business owners measured by the increase in bottom line revenues.

Another change is the increased interest in the "Green Movement". Whether you are a fan of recycled products, environmental concerns or energy (money) saving ideas or not, consumers are becoming more demanding that business offers them the green alternative. Restaurant owners are seeing increasing numbers of customers asking that doggie bags contain no Styrofoam. Increased usage of reusable shopping bags, CFL and LED light bulbs, recycled products and waste reducing containers are all priorities of today's consumers. Our cities are now on board and offer recycling. The Chamber is on board too. "Working Green" is the name of the chambers green effort. A committee chaired by Laureen Wilder Designs, LLC is now offering Green Certification. This first of its kind program in Missouri Chambers of Commerce offers a Chamber Green Certification process for your business. Consumers will know your business is green certified by seeing the Kirkwood•Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce seal posted at your business. Additionally, you receive recognition as a green business in the Chamber's directory and on our website. Just e-mail Laureen at laureewilderdesigns.com for more information.

Since change is an important part of the way business is done in 2011, the Chamber is offering "Business Boot Camp". Offered are six separate six week courses to bring you up to date on important business basics like: Legal issues, Financial necessities, Social Networking, Marketing, and more. American Eagle Credit Union is sponsoring this educational series and offers other leading businesses to join in the sponsorship.

No crystal ball is needed to forecast the changes and challenges of 2011. It is important that members of the Kirkwood - Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce are aware of consumer needs and trends. Many opportunities will be provided to our members to insure you are well informed, well educated and prepared to meet the challenges of a brand new year.
