Getting to Know...
Allison C. Flammang, DO
Family Practice Physician

If you ask Dr. Allison Flammang where she was raised, she’ll likely treat you to a beautiful smile and reply, “I was a ‘nomadic’ child. My father is a minister,” she explains. “I was born in California and10 days later, moved to Pennsylvania, followed by West Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, and then to Missouri.”

Along the way, she met a lot of new people and learned at a young age how to make friends and the art of putting people, and herself, at ease with each other. By the time she was in high school, she had attended a number of different schools, and was beginning to think about college and choosing the profession she wanted to pursue.

Helping her to make this decision was the fact Dr. Flammang’s mother was a secretary in one of the hospitals where they lived. “That gave me a lot of shadowing opportunities in hospitals which provided me with a deep understanding of the caring and commitment medical professionals provide.

“I also went on a couple of mission trips. One was to Jamaica where I helped run a small clinic for a week. That was a fulfilling experience which lead me to focus on the fact that I wanted to be a doctor and help people.”

Recognizing her love of science had been apparent since childhood, things began to fall into place. She earned her BS from Truman State College, where she met her future husband.

“I had returned to Missouri for my third and fourth rotations in med school.” She earned her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Des Moines University - College of Osteopathic Medicine.

She recently completed her family medicine residency at Des Peres Hospital where she cared for patients of all ages on an inpatient and outpatient basis. “I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Hospital staff after doing my residency here,” Dr Flammang reports.

Dr. Flammang is a board certified Family Practice physician and is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS.) She provides comprehensive family medical care for children age 5 and up as well as adults and seniors.

She, her husband and 18-month-old daughter, live in St. Charles. Dr Flammang enjoys running on her time off, especially a 5K, which she does on an annual basis. “I want to be a positive role model to my daughter. It’s important that she sees I am committed to doing the necessary work to maintain good health habits.”

About Osteopathic Medicine
According to the American Osteopathic Association osteopathic medicine brings a unique philosophy to traditional medicine. Osteopathic medicine focuses on the whole person, the relationship of the body’s nerves, muscles, bones and organs, and the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

Osteopathic medicine is one of the fastest growing health professions, with one out of every five medical students enrolled in a college of osteopathic medicine. Osteopathic physicians (DOs) apply the tenets of osteopathic medicine to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury. Osteopathic physicians are fully trained, licensed to prescribe medicine and practice in all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

“In general, I’m pretty much a ‘big picture’ person, so looking at a patient holistically makes sense for me. Plus, I knew I wanted to go into primary care and since a lot of DO schools are focusing on primary care, it worked out well for me to follow the path I have chosen. By offering family care, I am able to treat every person as an individual who is part of that family.”
